Consultant General Surgeon

James Gossage is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in cancer of the oesophagus and stomach and benign disease of the upper digestive tract.

After completing his training in London, he was awarded a laparoscopic surgical fellowship and a HCA Foundation grant to study surgical techniques in the Professorial Unit in Adelaide, Australia. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons grant to enable him to train in trauma surgery in South Africa.

His specialist expertise is in oesophageal and gastric cancer as well as keyhole surgery for conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux, achalasia, GIST tumours and hiatus hernias.

Mr Gossage also offers a wide range of general surgical and day case procedures, including laparoscopic hernia repair, complex incisional hernia repairs and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He also performs both diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

He has a strong academic background and was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons for his research during his higher degree. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Kings College, London and an affiliated researcher with the Upper Gastrointestinal Research Unit at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles on his specialist area, two book chapters and a textbook on surgery.
